In England and Wales
there were nearly 5,000 compulsory liquidations and creditors voluntary
liquidations (CVLs) in total in the last quarter of 2008 according to
the h.m. insolvency service figures. This was a rise of almost twelve
percent on Q3 2008 and also an increase of over fifty per cent on Q4
the previous year. This was made up of 1,562 compulsory liquidations
(which are up 4.5% on the previous quarter and 34.4% on the corresponding
quarter of the previous year) and over 3,000 CVLs (creditors' voluntary
liquidations) (a rise of over 62 per cent on the corresponding quarter
of the year before).
In the 12 months
ending quarter 4 2008, about one out of 150 active companies (nearly
1 per cent) went into liquidation compared to the previous quarter when
1 out of every 165 of active companies were put into liquidation.
